This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all moving, handling, loading, unloading and driving operations.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, protect property, and minimise risks arising from our work. We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing proportionate control measures in all areas of our man and van and removal services.
Management Responsibilities
The directors of Man with Van Motspur Park Ltd. have overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. They will ensure that adequate resources, information, instruction and supervision are provided to maintain safe systems of work. Management will:
Plan work activities to minimise risk, particularly in relation to manual handling, loading, unloading and driving. Ensure that suitable risk assessments are carried out for regular and non-routine tasks. Provide and maintain vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and serviceable condition. Monitor compliance with this policy and review it regularly to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice or company operations.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a legal and moral duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must:
Follow company safety procedures and instructions at all times. Use equipment and vehicles only for their intended purpose and in accordance with training. Wear any required personal protective equipment and keep it in good condition. Report accidents, incidents, near misses, hazards and defective equipment to management promptly. Cooperate with management in the implementation of this policy, including attending training and participating in risk assessments where required.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Man with Van Motspur Park Ltd. will carry out and maintain suitable and sufficient risk assessments for its operations, including domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading and unloading, and transportation of goods. Where significant risks are identified, written safe systems of work will be implemented and communicated to staff.
Risk assessments will give particular attention to manual handling of heavy or awkward items, vehicle movements in confined or busy areas, working in customers premises, including staircases and shared access routes, and handling fragile, high-value or hazardous items where accepted by the company. Control measures will include appropriate lifting techniques, use of handling aids, clear communication, and planning of routes and loads.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Due to the nature of removal work, manual handling is a key area of risk. The company will seek to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable and will reduce risks by:
Using trolleys, dollies, lifting straps and other equipment where appropriate. Planning lifts and team handling for large or heavy items. Training staff in correct lifting techniques and safe team coordination. Assessing load weight, shape and stability before moving items.
All equipment provided by Man with Van Motspur Park Ltd. will be inspected regularly, maintained in good repair and removed from use if defective. Employees must not modify equipment or use items that appear unsafe.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
The company recognises that road safety is an essential part of our health and safety responsibilities. We will ensure that vehicles are suitable for the work undertaken, maintained according to manufacturer and legal requirements, and checked regularly by drivers before use.
Drivers must be competent, appropriately licensed and medically fit to drive. They are responsible for driving in a safe, legal and considerate manner, complying with speed limits, rest requirements and all road traffic regulations. Loads must be planned, distributed and secured to prevent movement during transit and to avoid overloading.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working at customer locations, Man with Van Motspur Park Ltd. staff will take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors and members of the public from risk. This includes:
Maintaining clear access routes where possible. Using safe lifting and carrying methods on stairs and in confined spaces. Communicating with customers about any hazards identified, such as tripping risks, slippery surfaces or restricted access. Taking care when moving items near pedestrians, parked vehicles and property.
Training, Information and Supervision
The company will provide employees with appropriate health and safety training, proportionate to their role and responsibilities. This may include induction training, manual handling instruction, safe use of equipment and vehicles, awareness of site-specific risks, and emergency procedures.
Information about hazards and safe working methods will be communicated clearly, and supervision will be provided to ensure that procedures are followed, particularly for new or inexperienced staff.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as practicable. The company will investigate incidents to identify root causes and take steps to prevent recurrence. Appropriate first aid provisions will be maintained according to the size and nature of the workforce and the work undertaken.
Emergency procedures, including response to fire, vehicle collision, personal injury and property damage, will be established and explained to relevant staff. Employees are expected to act promptly, calmly and in accordance with training in any emergency situation.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Man with Van Motspur Park Ltd. is committed to consulting with employees on health and safety matters and encouraging suggestions for improvement. Feedback from staff, customers and other stakeholders will be considered when reviewing working practices and control measures.
This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in our removal services, applicable legislation and best practice. All employees will be informed of any significant changes that affect their duties or working methods.
